Partition Magic's Error #11019

After upgrading to Windows XP SP2, Partition Magic stopped working and would display Error #11019. It's been over a year and a half since I first encountered this message and I didn't bother searching for a solution. I expected Symantecs to release a new version that would simply make this problem go away.

Well, after a year and a half, I decide to try Partition Magic again and I'm still getting the same error message. The only response on Symantec's Support website is from 2004 and it says that it's a known problem with no solution. Bull!

There is a great answer to somebody's question on Google Answer about Partition Magic and Error 11019.

It describes the issue with Windows XP SP1 and suggest some work around but mostly it's useless. Google Answer seems to encourage people to answer in long winded ways with way too much information. A response to the answer was helpful as the commenter points that, he/she was able to get Partition Magic to work by simply deleting [HKLM\SYSTEM\MountedDevice1] folder from the registry.

My problem was that I couldn't delete [HKLM\SYSTEM\MountedDevice1] from the registry. I tried changing the permissions, renaming then deleting, using the commandline to delete it by running "REG DELETE HKLM\SYSTEM\MountedDevice1" but nothing worked. I was sure there was a solution, so googled some more and I came across comments concerning how to fix SP1 installation errors by deleting the LASTGOOD directory and the the LastKnownGoodConfig(?) from the registry. My windows directory didn't have a LASTGOOD directory, but I did have a LastKnownGoodConfig(?) key in [HKLM\SYSTEM].

Once I deleted the [HKLM\SYSTEM\LastKnownGoodConfig] key, I was able to delete [HKLM\SYSTEM\MountedDevice1]! Sweet! Once I deleted [HKLM\SYSTEM\MountedDevice1], Partition Magic rebooted and started repartition. As I'm typing this entry, Partition Magic is resizing my 60GB windows partition to 45GB primary and creating 2 logical drives where I will installing Ubuntu Dapper. Finally, after a year and a half, I can install Linux on my laptop again. :)

Now, was that really that hard to do Symantec?
